“Furia,” the Spanish series that gives voice to five angry women

Conceived as a choral narrative, “Furia” portrays a series of women who have every reason to succumb to fits of fury. The Spanish series, released on HBO Max on July 11, blends humor and tension, realism and absurdity, much to the delight of “La Vanguardia,” which calls it the best Spanish production of the year.

Marga (Carmen Machi) is a snob. She spends her days locked away in her architect-designed house surrounded by a vast garden, creating sculptures always based on the same theme: the contrast between babies and guns. Is her success because she belongs to the privileged class and therefore has time to create, or do critics really see something in her creations?

Meanwhile, right under her nose, her husband Roberto (Alberto San Juan) is cheating on her with Tina (Claudia Salas), the cleaning lady, the third inhabitant of this controlled space. Before the end of this first episode of Furia, [broadcast in France on HBO Max since July 11], this very disturbing harmony will have been shattered. We won't reveal how or when. From episode to episode, the series continues to portray women on the verge of a crisis of... fury.

All the comedy here lies in the tension implicit in each scenario. Aitor Etxebarria's music adds to the cynicism and strangeness that reign.
